WORKSHOP: FILE MANAGEMENT

This one-session class is designed to give students an understanding of how to work with files and folders in Microsoft Windows. Prerequisite: Please have basic computer skills before taking this course.

Class Outline:

  1. Computer parts:  storage

    1. Internal hard drive

    2. CD, DVD

    3. USB port:  flash drive, external hard drive* pass out flash drives 

  2. How to see storage:  My Computer (also Windows Explorer)

    1. Start / My Computer / double click to open device

    2. Properties:  Start / My Computer / R click to show device properties

  3.  Files and Folders

    1. Use folders to organize files

    2. View

  4. Create a file

    1. Open application, Save As

    2. Copy (R click / copy and R click / paste)

  5. Rename a file

    1. R click / rename

    2. Select (one click) / File / rename

  6. Delete a file

    1. R click / delete

    2. Select (one click) / File / delete

    3. Recycle bin

  7. Create a folder

    1. File / New / Folder

    2. R click / New / Folder

    3. Copy a folder: R click / copy and R click / paste

    4. Move files into folder (Save As, click and drag)

  8. Using the desktop

    1. Save a file to the desktop (Save As)

    2. Click and drag to desktop

  9. Internal Hard Drive (C:)

    1. My Documents
